Is an Online Degree a Good Choice for Expats?

Expats need to constantly refine their skills and hone their education while overseas in order to keep pace with the changing foreign world around them. For many, it may be a good idea to consider getting a degree online.

Thanks to the information superhighway, you can now get a degree from anywhere so long as you have a computer and internet access. Better yet, most indications suggest that online degrees are increasingly gaining the respect of employers – especially for employers overseas.

Michele Fabio over at the Career by Choice Blog writes an excellent informational about the subject. She points out that in the United States, the number of students taking online courses doubled to 3.9 million between 2003 and 2007, which was faster than the growth in traditional university settings by 12%.

The thing is, the U.S. is actually way behind the curb regarding online education. In the UK, Australia and New Zealand, online education accounted for how 14% of students got their degrees – but that statistic was gathered way back in 2000 – almost 10 years ago.

If you do decide to make the effort to get an online degree, the best advice in getting started is to make sure that you are adequately motivated to complete it. It does take considerable personal discipline to complete a degree that allows students such independence in their studies.

Though, of course, expats are already of the breed that know the burden (and the benefits!) of that independent lifestyle. If you’re living abroad and are interested in pursuing a further education, then online degrees are a fantastic idea for expats.
