Navigating the Rivers, Lagoons and Lakes of the Dominican Republic

Lake Enriquillo

Lake Enriquillo is a large lake with the surface area of 164 square kilometers (102 square miles). It holds a few records, such as largest lake in the Caribbean, lowest point in the Caribbean and lowest point on any ocean island, with a surface elevation of -39 meters (-128 feet). This saltwater lake is situated in the southwest of the Dominican Republic, close to the border of Haiti. Several rivers flow into Lake Enriquillo, but it has no outlets. Three islands exist in its waters, such as Isla Cabritas. People go there to the lake and islands to observe the wildlife, which includes crocodiles, iguanas, hummingbirds, flamingos and other interesting species.

Gri Gri Lagoon

The Gri Gri Lagoon is freshwater lagoon that has a mangrove forest canopy above the water. In terms of natural scenery, it has crystal clear green waters, golden reefs and caves. There are also some interesting types of fish and birds that live around this small lagoon. Lots of people take advantage of diving here.

Yaque del Norte

The Yaque del Norte river is the longest Dominican river, and is over 298 kilometers (185 miles) long. It is an important river to this country, as many people use its waters to irrigate soil. The Yaque del Norte rises in the center of the country, in the Cordillera Central, by Santiago. It runs through Santiago, then through the Cibao Valley, and eventually empties into the Bay by Monte Cristi, where it turns into a delta.

Rio Ozama

The Rio Ozama is a river that rises in hill of Loma Siete Cabezas, and eventually flows through the capital city, Santo Domingo, cutting it in half, before draining into the Atlantic Ocean. This river is 148 kilometers (92 miles) in length, but unfortunately is very polluted in many different areas.

La Toma de San Cristobal

La Toma De San Cristobal is a section of the river Nigua that has been converted into a place where people can swim and bathe. It is free and open to the public, with many slides and other facilities. Though fun, it is not the ideal place to relax, as it is always full of children, especially in the summer.
